What is the Fair Play Charter? It's often difficult for consumers
to know whether they are dealing with reputable dealers and traders who
are trying to operate in a fair and honest way, or whether they are dealing
with one of the ever-growing band of rouge dealers. In an attempt to address
and combat this problem, the Trading Standards Services have introduced
the Fair Play Charter, a scheme for motor dealers to register their business.
This is a voluntary scheme and once the dealer has registered the Trading
Standards will then send officers to visit and evaluate your business. This
evaluation is extremely in-depth and covers every aspect of the business,
and every department, including, all administration, car sales, car purchase
and the entire after sales. If the Trading Standards feel that the business
already demonstrates and will continue to demonstrate the commitment and
standards to customers, you are then awarded the Fair Play Charter certificate
to proudly display. There are many hundreds of motor dealers in the Greater
Manchester area not all of them have applied to join the charter. Out of
those that have applied, as at January 2002, 49 garages meet the criteria
for membership of the fair play charter. As
founder members of the Fair Play Charter we will continue to support any
steps to ensure that the consumers get a fair and honest deal.
